Tiffany Treasure Of The Finger Lakes

The Willard Memorial Chapel is certainly a treasure as well as a hidden gem of the Finger Lakes. Located in Auburn, New York, the historic site was originally part of the Auburn Theological Seminary established in 1818. The chapel was constructed between 1892 and 1894. The chapel’s interior was entirely designed and handcrafted by the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company of New York City.

After the seminary relocated to Manhattan in 1939, the chapel complex served various purposes, including use by the U.S. Navy during World War II and later as apartments for veterans. In 1957, the Seventh-day Adventist Church purchased and maintained the chapel until 1988.

Facing the threat of dismantlement of its Tiffany features in 1989, the Community Preservation Committee (CPC) launched a successful fundraising campaign to purchase and preserve the chapel, acquiring it in 1990.

Today, Willard Memorial Chapel is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places and functions as a community center, hosting social and cultural activities, and serves as a tourist destination, wedding venue, concert hall, and lecture hall.

In April 2005, it received National Historic Landmark designation.
